Do you have pain in your thigh that begins at the hip and spreads to your knee? You may be suffering from Iliotibial Band Syndrome (ITBS).
The iliotibial band begins above the hip and extends to the outer side of the shin bone (tibia) just below the knee. The IT band works with several of the thigh muscles to provide stability to the outside of the knee.
ITBS occurs when there is irritation to this band of tissue. Common symptoms include:
- Pain over the outside of the knee.
- Swelling at the location of discomfort.
- A snapping or popping sensation as the knee is bent.
Endurance athletes are especially prone to ITBS. Athletes who suddenly increase their level of activity also can develop ITBS.
At Signature Medical Group, our orthopedic and sports medicine specialists are experts in treating conditions such as ITBS. We offer convenient locations and hours to meet your needs. Online rating surveys have given our specialists 4.1 out of 5 stars. In addition, studies indicate that SMG's independent physicians outperform others by providing quality care at a 20 to 30 percent less cost.
The best course of treatment for ITBS starts with rest. Sufferers should avoid activities that make their symptoms worse.
Icing the area of discomfort can help relieve the pain and settle the inflammation. Anti-inflammatory medications may also help. If those efforts fail, a cortisone injection may be used.
If you think you have ITBS or are experiencing pain in your back, neck, wrist or shoulder, make an appointment today to see one of our orthopedic and sports medicine specialists.
