Treating Ganglion Cysts

If you notice a little lump on your wrist and don't know what it is, it may be a ganglion cyst.

A ganglion cyst is noncancerous and often is on the tendons or joints of wrists and hands. It's usually painless but it can hurt if it presses a nerve. In a few cases, the cyst can interfere with your joint movement.

The cyst will usually clear on its own. If troublesome, it can be drained or removed.

At Signature Medical Group, our orthopedic doctors are trained to treat ganglion cysts. We also care for other conditions in the hands, wrist, arm and shoulders. Often you can see one of our specialists the same day you make an appointment. And we offer convenient hours at night and on weekends.

Also known as Bible cysts, ganglion cysts are more common among women, and 70 percent occur in people between the ages of 20-40.

We don't know what causes ganglion cysts. The most likely theory involves a flaw in the joint or tendon that allows the joint tissue to bulge out.

Many cysts will disappear without treatment. Others can be removed with a needle, drawing out the liquid material.

If you have symptoms, visit a Signature Medical Group doctor, who will set you on the best course of treatment. Make an appointment today to see one of our specialists.
