A bone density screening, also commonly known as a bone density exam, is a simple x-ray type screening of the spine and hip bones. The main purpose of the screening is to diagnose bone strength and osteoporosis. From the exam, your doctor will analyze your likelihood of bone fractures and decide the best treatment moving forward. This screening should be next on your annual to-do-list if you are a:

  • Postmenopausal woman
  • Man over the age of 70
  • Over 50 and have recently broken a bone
  • Losing more than .5 inches in height each year

A semi-annual exam is recommended to ensure bone health. If you have been diagnosed with osteoporosis, a bone density screening will become a routine process for you. Osteoporosis patients must be examined annually to track the progress of treatment.
