Want a healthy brain? Eat more fruits, vegetables and grains

A diet that includes large amounts of fruits, vegetables, olive oil, beans and cereal grains may have a positive impact on your brain health, a new study finds.

The study, published in the journal Neurology,  found that older people who followed a Mediterranean diet retained more brain volume over a three-year period than those who did not follow the diet as closely.

At Signature Medical Group, our neurosurgeons specialize in comprehensive surgical and nonsurgical services for adult patients with injuries or diseases to the brain, spine and nerves that connect with the brain and spine.

Results from the new diet study conducted in Scotland were in contrast to earlier studies, which showed eating more fish and less meat were not related to changes in the brain.

The Mediterranean diet includes large amounts of fruits, vegetables, olive oil, beans and cereal grains such as wheat and rice, moderate amounts of fish, dairy and wine, and limited red meat and poultry.

Everyone’s brain shrinks as they get older. The study found that people in their mid-70s who ate a Mediterranean diet lost less brain mass than people who ate a diet more typical of their native Scotland.
