Signature Program Backs New Study on Infant Mortality Rates

A new study on infant mortality rates in the U.S. is finding mixed results.

Researchers are encouraged to report that fewer babies are dying. The infant mortality rate has fallen by 15 percent in the past 10 years. Still, the rate remains higher than in many other developed nations.

“On the surface, (the rate decrease) seems like good news. But it is far from time to celebrate,” Dr. Paul Jarris, chief medical officer for the March of Dimes, a charity that works to prevent birth defects, tells NBC news.

“While this report shows overall improvement to infant mortality rates, women of color and their children continue to bear a disproportionate burden,” Dr. Jarris added. “This report highlights the need to strengthen programs that serve low income and at-risk communities, especially those with the highest infant mortality rates.”

At Signature Medical Group, we're doing just that. Our Signature Maternity Care Home Model for expectant mothers on Medicaid has achieved positive results since its inception in 2013.

The program began when Signature received a Strong Start for Mothers and Newborns grant from the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. In just over three years, we have worked with more than 2,500 women from the St. Louis and Kansas City areas.

For expectant mothers, our program addresses physical, mental and environmental concerns within a trauma-informed framework. Our team includes a nurse navigator, social workers and OB-GYN doctors and staff collaborating to coordinate care.

More than 1,500 babies have been delivered under the Signature Maternity Care Home Model. Preterm births have been reduced by 16 percent and women are entering prenatal care earlier.

Our Maternity Care Home Model is only one aspect of how we care for expectant mothers. Signature provides comprehensive maternity care for all patients regardless of social or economic status.

Our OB-GYN specialists will look after all your healthcare needs as a woman and our pediatricians strive to keep your babies healthy and thriving in their formative years.

One of the more noteworthy aspects found in the recent study is that more than 40 percent of pregnancies are unplanned. This emphasizes the importance of providing women the support and resources to prepare and enter prenatal care as early as possible.

At Signature Medical Group, we care about these issues. We want mothers and their babies to be healthy and enjoy this special time. Our OB-GYNs and pediatricians are ready to help. Make an appointment today to get expert advice and care.
