A new study on infant mortality rates in the U.S. is finding mixed results.
Researchers are encouraged to report that fewer babies are dying. The infant mortality rate has fallen by 15 percent in the past 10 years. Still, the rate remains higher than in many other developed nations.
“On the surface, (the rate decrease) seems like good news. But it is far from time to celebrate,” Dr. Paul Jarris, chief medical officer for the March of Dimes, a charity that works to prevent birth defects, tells NBC news.
“While this report shows overall improvement to infant mortality rates, women of color and their children continue to bear a disproportionate burden,” Dr. Jarris added. “This report highlights the need to strengthen programs that serve low income and at-risk communities, especially those with the highest infant mortality rates.”
