How to Get Your Pre-Pregnancy Body Back

Posted by Signature Medical Group on Monday, April 4, 2016 in Obstetrics/Gynecology

Celebrity moms across America are flaunting their post-baby bodies on the cover of tabloid magazines. Duchess Catherine, Beyonce, Jessica Alba- their flat bellies and toned bodies seem to have shown up immediately. But these types of body transformations didn't happen overnight. They take time and should be done through healthy means.

Here are some common questions that Signature Medical Group OB-GYNs receive from their patients:

How long should it take me to get back to pre-pregnancy weight?

If you are a mom with a normal BMI (body mass index) and a weight gain between 25 and 35 pounds prior to childbirth, you can expect to lose half of your baby weight within the first six weeks. You will drop the rest months later, ideally at the healthy rate of one to two pounds per week. Most women find themselves back to their pre-pregnancy bodies six months after giving birth. Make sure you reach out to your doctor and ask questions about the timing of working out or being active.

What happens if I lose weight too quickly after giving birth?

Give yourself some time to recover from child birth. Crash dieting can deteriorate your muscles, slow your metabolism and leave you exhausted or stressed. If you're breastfeeding, you'll need calories to produce both quality and quantity of milk.

What are the best ways for me to lose weight after childbirth?

Exercising and eating healthy are the keys to losing weight. Consume high-calorie foods in moderation and watch what other foods you're eating. Try skim milk instead of 2 percent milk and limit snacking.
