For the past twelve years, local St. Louis-area physicians have provided hundreds of indigent patients in the Dominican Republic access to free medical care and orthopedic surgical reconstructive procedures. Working with the nonprofit organization Operation Walk – Freedom to Move, physicians John Tessier M.D., David Strege M.D., John Powell M.D. and Jesse Susi M.D., all of Signature Medical Group, have provided world-class care to patients who do not have access to treatments for crippling hip and knee arthritis, fracture deformities, pediatric upper extremity contractures and other debilitating bone and joint conditions.
Each January, these doctors travel to the Dominican Republic for an annual orthopedic surgery mission utilizing the medical facilities of Creighton Universities’ Institute for Latin American Concern (ILAC). The physicians provide orthopedic evaluations and surgeries for the countries’ most vulnerable populations during these visits.
In addition to providing these services, the physicians educate local doctors and medical practitioners on the newest techniques, treatments, and medical advancements, working to improve the quality of health care in these countries moving forward.
