Hi, my name is Mike Azzam and I'm an orthopedic surgeon here at Kansas City Bone and Joint and I practice general orthopedics and also specialize in orthopedic sports medicine.

So I think the best thing for me is seeing a patient with a problem that I'm able to make better and following them through the recovery process and get them back to where they want to be whether that's sports, work, or activities with their family.

My fellowship in orthopedic sports medicine focused on the care of athletes and also on the care of injuries to the shoulder, knee, hip, elbow, and ankle. So while I do specialize in sports medicine, I also do general orthopedics and so I take care of fractures, sprains, and strains and also things like carpal tunnel syndrome or knee arthritis.

I think it's important - number one - for a patient to understand what their injury is and then - number two - to understand that there are different ways of treating it and going through the different options with them and I try to give people the information they need to make an informed decision taking into account what people do for a living and what they like to do for fun I think makes a big difference in what treatment they would prefer. You know, just understanding that every procedure and every surgery and every condition is important in that person's life and trying to give them the tools they need to get through it whether that's physical therapy or surgery or rest.

Orthopedics is an ever-expanding and ever-changing field and I think we have to stay at the forefront of what the research is while keeping in mind that we need to use things that have been proven.
