The New York Times reports that people who regularly run or walk briskly appear to have healthier discs in their spines than people who do not exercise. That’s according to one of the first studies to closely examine links between movement and disc health.
The findings rebut a widely held belief that activities like running might overtax the spine. Instead, those activities may make the spine sturdier.

The study was conducted at Deakin University in Australia and published in April in Scientific Reports.
Daniel Belavy, associate professor of exercise and musculoskeletal health at Deakin, led the research. He says the findings cannot prove that exercise caused people’s discs to become healthier, but only that people who ran had healthier discs.
The study also does conclude whether exercise might aid in treating existing disc problems. Belavy and his colleagues hope to delve into those issues in future experiments, the Times reports.
Still, Belavy told The Times that available evidence strongly indicates that “discs like movement,” and it would be worthwhile to take your back for a walk today.
